Members of the Marion County High School Interact Club have completed a months-long restoration project at Lasater Cemetery, breathing new life into one of the county’s oldest and most historically significant burial grounds.

The project began in July 2025 and recently concluded this month, spanning seven months of consistent volunteer work. Lasater Cemetery, which contains approximately 642 headstones, is believed to be among the oldest cemeteries in

Marion County. Over the course of the project, Interact Club members carefully cleaned and restored 263 of the cemetery’s oldest headstones, helping preserve the site for future generations.

Students dedicated countless hours to the cleanup effort, learning proper preservation techniques to ensure that the historic markers were cleaned safely and respectfully. The project not only improved the appearance of the cemetery, but also honored the individuals and families whose histories are tied to the community.

The Interact Club’s service initiatives, including the Lasater Cemetery restoration, are made possible through fundraisers and community donations. Those interested in supporting future Interact Club projects can make a donation by sending a check to MCHS, 160 Ridley Drive.

Through dedication, teamwork, and community involvement, the Marion County High School Interact Club has helped preserve an important piece of local history while also demonstrating the lasting impact of student-led service within the community.
