The announcement of several new businesses was made public during Powells Crossroads’ recent city meeting.

Mayor Dwight Richards step forward and made the announcement on Thursday, Dec. 18, detailing several businesses looking to make their mark within the community. Among one of the businesses looking to set up shop is V Industries, a company aiming to package and distribute widgets directly from Powells Crossroads beside David Hall Automotive.

“We were teetering with what they were talking about, and we felt it was borderline industrial. And there’s a fine line between commercial operation and industrial operation,” said Aldermen Greg Davis. “We decided what they were doing fell into commercial.”

Directly near it, a new takeout pizza restaurant is set to open for business, where the beauty shop owned by Tony Griffith resided. The pizza restaurant in question will be owned by Tony’s son and Director of Marion County Schools, Mark Griffith. Hummingbird Flowers from nearby Whitwell is also set to open up shop within the community, in addition to a new package store opening directly across the community’s fire hall. Sue Bob’s Restaurant in Powells Crossroads was also recently purchased by the Brays, who are converting the restaurant into the newest home for their wood carving business, Carve Away Brays. Anita and Mark Miller of BB at the Studio have also established Mercantile Coffee Company, the couple’s newest business within the community.

“We’re getting excited because it’s been years since we had this much business coming to Powells Crossroads,” said Davis.

All three members of the city board have expressed excitement for the upcoming businesses for the community. Each board member felt the businesses will economically benefit the community and provide additional sales tax revenue to the town, as Powells Crossroads operates solely through sales tax revenue in its municipality. As the new year kick-offs, all three leading members of the city board are looking ahead towards a bright future for Powells Crossroads as the businesses mentioned look to being established within the near future.
