The grounds below Marion and Grundy Counties were struck with a magnitude 2.4 earthquake at 9.7 kilometers within the earth during the nighttime hours this week.
Official numbers were made public by Chase Bryant, a Marion County native and aspiring meteorologist who runs the Chase Bryant Weather and Tri-State Area Weather Facebook pages. According to Chase Bryant Weather, the earthquake was reported to have occurred at 10:28 p.m., on Monday, Nov. 24, eight miles south of Tracy City in Marion County. No damages to property were reported.
Tennessee on average receives seven earthquakes a year, West and East Tennessee being the most actively seismic due to their locations on top of the New Madrid and East Tennessee Seismic Zones. Marion County in particular has rarely received earthquakes in its history, the last earthquake the area received was a 3.3 magnitude quake in 2020. Despite its rarity, it is always advised to be on the lookout and be prepared for anything that nature may throw out to the community.
Disclaimer: In last week’s Whitwell grant story, it was stated that Mayor Sandra Crabtree received the LPR grant from Fall Creek Falls State Park. This was incorrect, for the ceremony which she received it was held at Foster Falls. We apologize for the error.
