Sequatchie Valley Honor Guard dedicates monument to local veterans on Courthouse Square

Members of the Sequatchie Valley Veterans Honor Guard have recently gathered on Jasper’s Courthouse Square to officially designate an honorary monument for military veterans under the program.

The Honor Guard, formed in 2010, is a non-profit charter of military veterans who strive to commemorate those who’ve served in the military that passed away. The organization helps with conducting military burials, providing gun salutes, flag foldings, taps, and bullets inscribed with the names of the deceased’s loved ones. Their work encompasses the entire Sequatchie Valley region, including northern Alabama, serving as pallbearers during military funerals within the area.

On Friday, Nov.7 prior to Veterans Day, members of the Honor Guard including President Ron Barnett and Vice President Stan Brown have gathered to officially welcome and demonstrate the new monument, now displayed on the southern end of the courthouse lot facing Century 21. The monument contains the names of current members, as well as those who’ve passed away while under the Honor Guard umbrella. Sherry Barnett, Ron Barnett’s wife, explained the monument’s designation into the heart of the community means much to the organization, in terms of giving back and saying thank to those who’ve served in the military and others who were members of the Honor Guard itself.

“It’s a way to say thank you to them and for their service,” said Sherry.

The monument and its designation have been in the works for some time, gaining approval and support from county mayor David Jackson and the county commission prior to its design. All within the Honor Guard are delighted that such a monument is now officially on display for residents to admire in respect for the men and women who served the nation.

The Sequatchie Valley Veterans Honor Guard meet every third Tuesday each month at Kimball City Hall at 6 p.m. The organization is welcoming new members for those interested.
