The Whitwell Tigers returned to action last Friday night after a much-needed bye week following back-to-back heartbreaking losses. Whitwell traveled to Jo Byrns for Week 10 action and is likely headed back there for the first round of the Class 1A TSSAA playoffs next week. The Tigers came away with a 15-7 victory.

Jo Byrns struck first, taking an early 7-0 lead in the first quarter. Whitwell marched down the field, using up the rest of the quarter. In the second quarter, senior Talan Beason connected with fellow senior Xander Morgan for a touchdown. The extra point attempt failed, bringing the score to 7-6. Just two minutes later, sophomore Bennett Goforth broke free for a 57-yard rushing touchdown. The 2-point conversion was unsuccessful, giving the Tigers a 12-7 lead. At the end of the half, Leo Pardo drilled a 21-yard field goal, sending the teams into halftime with Whitwell ahead 15-7.

The second half saw plenty of back-and-forth action, but neither team was able to score. Late in the game, Jo Byrns had a chance to possibly tie, but the Tigers’ defense held strong, securing the road victory.

Whitwell’s offense was fluid, totaling 290 yards for the night. The Tigers’ ground game was particularly impressive, accounting for 249 of those yards. This win was a significant boost for Whitwell as the playoffs approach.

The Tigers return to action Friday at South Pittsburg. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
