The placement of American flags throughout Powells Crossroads was recently discussed during the Board of Mayor & Aldermen’s public meeting.
Before the meeting adjourned, Rodeny Ferro, president of the town’s Ruritan Club, explained the idea of adding new flags throughout the community. This was an idea which was previously presented to the board by members of the Ruritan Club. He requested suggestions from the board as to where they would like to have the flags be displayed, seeking their full support before moving further on the planned project. He also explained how each flag will be stationed level with the ground on separate posts of their own, with the club to cover all costs for each one installed.
During the discussion, Assistant Fire Chief Charlie McEntyre suggested starting work by placing a row of flags on city owned property in the heart of the community, particularly property which follows beside Highways 283 and 27. He further suggested how once all flags are installed, it would allow for residents to have a chance to see how they would look, possibly allowing for the Ruritan Club and fire department to contact citizens and private businesses to see if they are open to having flags installed on their properties. Additional analysis of pole height and flag size, as well as full approval from both the city board and the Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) are all required before work can officially begin.
“That’s one reason we wanted to work closely with you all, and maybe since this is a state highway with TDOT to see what they would allow if its actually on the edge of the road,” stated McEntyre.
Members of the city board shared their support of the proposed project, with McEntyre set to speak with TDOT before work for the project can officially begin.
