The formation of the South Pittsburg High School fishing team has recently been given the thumbs up during this month’s Board of Education meeting.
According to Director of Schools Mark Griffith, the fishing team will serve less as a sports team and more as a brand new extracurricular activity for students to engage in during each semester. The main reason of it serving more as an activity is due to the team not officially being sanctioned by the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association (TSSAA). The TSSAA is a non-profit organization whose purpose is to prioritize education through sports with leadership and interscholastic regulation.
Griffith also explained South Pittsburg High felt now is the time to finally establish their own fishing team, as both Marion County High School and Whitwell High School bear fishing teams of their own. Whitwell High School’s team in particular scored top honors during the 2020 Tennessee BASS Nation High School Championship, with Westin Moss of MCHS and Drake Hemby of Ravenwood High School in Brentwood playing for Whitwell’s team that year.
The item was approved by all members of the Board, granting SPHS the opportunity to form a fishing team of its own during the upcoming school year.
