The South Pittsburg Softball team was back in action on the diamond last Monday for a road game, and the regular-season District Champions were ready to compete. The squad is led by senior Kaylee Kilgore, who is dominant in the circle, regularly overpowering opponents. Kilgore showcased her talent once again, helping the Lady Pirates secure a 6-0 victory on the road.

The senior struck out 18 batters in the game, allowing just one hit and no runs in seven innings while walking two. Kilgore’s performance was outstanding, reinforcing why she is considered one of the best pitchers in the state.

The Lady Pirates struggled to get on the board early, with the score remaining tied at zero through the first three innings. However, in the top of the fourth, South Pittsburg broke the deadlock when a wild pitch allowed Adelyn McLemore to score. Jaydra Gentry then grounded out, driving in another run. That accounted for all of the scoring in the fourth inning.

The next inning started with a bang as Sophie Stalyon led off with a triple. Macy Mashburn reached base on a dropped third strike, and though the throw to retire her was successful, it allowed Stalyon to score. In the seventh inning, Stalyon was at it again, leading off with a single. McLemore followed by putting the ball in play, driving in a run, and Chelsea Mayfield grounded out, also bringing in a run.

McLemore was a standout at the plate, leading the team with two RBIs and contributing one hit. Kynleigh Rice and Stalyon each had two hits, leading the Lady Pirates in that category. The team’s defense was stellar behind Kilgore, with no errors committed in the field. As the regular season draws to a close, South Pittsburg is beginning to gear up for the District Tournament.

The Lady Pirates will be back in action at home on May 1st at 5:00 pm.
