This aerial view of the Power Plant at Hales Bar Dam dates from 1936. This area was home to Dragging Canoe, a Cherokee Chief born in 1738 who refused to go along with the Treaty of Sycamore Shoals in 1775 to sell a large portion of the tribe’s land. Instead, Dragging Canoe resisted and for 17 years lead the Chickamauga as they warriors as they waged war on the settlers moving into the Tennessee Valley. He died on Feb. 29, 1792 and was buried at Running Water near Whiteside.
