The Whitwell Tigers were back in action at home last Friday night against the Oakwood Christian Academy Eagles. The last time the two teams met, it was the Tigers running them out of their own gym by a score of 71–25. This time around, Whitwell came away with a 75–50 victory.
In the first quarter, it was Jordan Powell scoring seven of the Tigers’ 12 points. Senior Tyson Brashears and sophomore Ryder Burns each had two points. Sophomore Brody Harvey got himself into the scoring with a free throw. The Eagles scored 14 in the period to give them the early lead.
The Tigers found their rhythm on offense in the second quarter, with Brashears leading the way with eight points. Powell had seven points to stay consistent from the first quarter. Collin Beason scored three points, and Bennett Goforth did the same by connecting on a triple. Harvey had four points to round out the scoring. Still, the Eagles remained in the contest at the break, trailing by only six.
It was in the second half when the Tigers decided to buckle down on defense. The defense allowed only nine points in the third, while the offense scored 27. Powell had nine points in the quarter. Harvey followed with six. Goforth added five points. Brashears finished with four, and Beason had three.
Beason and Powell led the scoring in the fourth with four points apiece. Harvey had a bucket to finish his scoring on the night. Brashears was able to knock one down from the charity stripe to round out the scoring.
Despite allowing OCA to hang around early, the Tigers buckled down defensively in the second half, making it difficult for the Eagles to get good looks.
The Tigers are back in action on Thursday, January 29 at Lookout Valley. JV Boys tip off at 4 p.m., Varsity Girls at 5:30 p.m., and Varsity Boys at 7 p.m.
