Cathy Black of Whitwell’s Orena Humphrey Public Library recently announced this summer’s reading program, scheduled to run throughout June and July.
During the recent public meeting, Black explained that the children’s summer reading program will begin on Tuesday, June 3, and continue every Tuesday at 10 a.m. until its final session on Tuesday, July 22. This year’s theme, “Color Our World,” will focus on arts and crafts, giving children the opportunity to explore different forms of artistic expression through weekly classes. One class will teach watercolor painting, while another will introduce the basics of sewing.
Black also noted the library is partnering with Whitwell Elementary School’s summer camp to expand access to the arts. Teachers from the school will assist with the reading program’s art classes, ensuring that students who can’t attend the library sessions still have the chance to engage with the material through the school’s camp.
In addition to the Tuesday sessions for younger children, the library will host separate classes on Mondays and Wednesdays for older students in 4th grade and up. Registration for the program opened earlier this month and remains open for those interested. Information about signing up for the Monday and Wednesday classes will also be shared across local schools, inviting additional students to participate either as attendees or volunteers.
