The Whitwell High School boys basketball team has struggled to find wins over the past two seasons, leading to coaching changes in back-to-back years. After just one season under Zeke Rudolph, Whitwell decided to move in a different direction. The coaching search concluded a couple of weeks ago when the school announced that Chad Billingsley would take over the program.
If the name Billingsley sounds familiar, it’s likely because he’s also the head baseball coach at Whitwell. He recently wrapped up his fourth season with the baseball team, leading them to the State Tournament for the first time in school history. When Billingsley took over that program, the Tigers were coming off a 2-20 season.
Now, Billingsley steps into a similar challenge with a basketball team that has struggled to string together wins.. While a trip to the State Tournament may not be realistic just yet, Whitwell knows the kind of coach it’s getting in Billingsley.
Billingsley is known as a players’ coach—someone who brings out the best in his athletes and pushes them to their limits. He has already proven he can win on the diamond, and the hope within the program is that his success will translate to the hardwood.
The Tigers are returning several key players, especially freshmen who now have a full year of varsity experience. Last year’s team was young, but this season’s roster should feature more veteran presence.
Whitwell is hoping for progress on the court, and with Billingsley at the helm, there’s renewed optimism and energy surrounding the basketball program.
