VFW hosts Christmas dinner and awards ceremony

The Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) held their annual Christmas dinner on December 2, recognizing important members and their contributions.

Karen White presented a beautifully handcrafted welcome sign to the VFW & Auxiliary for the post. The VFW Law Enforcement Officer of the Year award was bestowed upon Officer Derrick Long of the Jasper Police Department. “Thank you for all you do to ensure our safety and may God Bless you and keep you safe!” White stated.

Many wonderful people were recognized for their heroic and admirable actions as supporters of the community.

Dustin “Stewie” Shankles was recognized as Fire Fighter of the Year and Melina Carson stated, “You amaze us all in everything you do for our community and our veterans!”

Dianna Guess was recognized for EMT of the Year. Carson expressed, “Dianna has done so much to serve her community and others abroad. We appreciate your service.”

Another community member that has supported the organization and recognized during the ceremony was Sandra Webb for Outstanding Support. “We appreciate all you do and it doesn’t go unnoticed,” said Carson.

John Carson was recognized for his work with the VFW and his work for the organization’s veterans. “Thank you to Chris Martin for your kind words in honoring my dad. He was also excited to have some of his grandchildren and great grandchildren with him tonight.” Carson stated.

Mother daughter team Karen and Romona Turner are known as a duo that never fails to show up when asked and stay from start to finish. “We appreciate them more than they will ever understand. Your auxiliary family loves you both.” said Carson.

Christi Ellison was recognized as Teacher of the Year for the outstanding job she does for the elementary age children teaching them and reinforcing patriotism in her classroom.

Raymond Bucky White was presented a knife as a recognition and ‘thank you’ for all the hours spent supporting and helping the VFW and Auxiliary.

Primex Compounding was recognized for their outstanding support of the Veterans and community. They not only donate monetary support but also stand up and work during many of their endeavors. “Thank you Primex!” Carson expressed.
