Vera Nell Hinton Storey, 96

Vera Nell Hinton Storey of South Pittsburg, TN passed away on Wednesday February 7th, at the age of 96. She was born in Manchester, Alabama on September 19, 1927. Vera graduated from the Alabama School of Nursing at Birmingham.  During her 45 years of nursing, she taught nursing classes and served as Director of Nursing at South Pittsburg Hospital until her retirement. She was a member of the South Pittsburg First Baptist Church, the Order of the Eastern Star, South Pittsburg Historical Preservation Society, South Pittsburg Ladies Club, and a volunteer for the National Cornbread Festival.  She was welcomed into heaven by the “Driving Miss Daisy Club” of which she was the last surviving member.

Vera loved her family dearly and was happy to share stories about them.  She was a positive influence on many people’s lives, both personally and professionally. She was known to be a loyal friend to many and always looked for the good in people. Vera was a voracious reader and seldom missed watching the Atlanta Braves or Alabama football. She enjoyed bird watching in her backyard, fishing at Mud Creek, and vacationing at the beach with all her family. Vera never met a stranger and was considered the unofficial ambassador of Stevarino’s Restaurant, where she could be found on Friday nights enjoying her friends and welcoming newcomers. Vera and Joe came to South Pittsburg for a short visit in 1951, fell in love with the community and made it their home.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Galen Van Dorn “Joe” Storey, parents, UL and Hettie Hinton, stepmother Ilo Hinton, and brother, Glen Hinton. She is survived by her daughters, Jan (Bill) Hewgley and June (Randy) Cooper; grandchildren, Beth (Barry) Hamilton, Joe (Mardys) Hewgley, Will Cooper, and Laura (Andrew) Hohwald; great grandchildren Sloan Hamilton, Bryan Hamilton, Camryn Hewgley, Tripp Hewgley, Cooper Hohwald, and Taylor Hohwald; and a large extended family, including Paul and JoAnn Storey, Linda Caldwell, and Sara Kirkpatrick.

The family will receive friends at Rogers Funeral Home in South Pittsburg, TN on Saturday, February 10th from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. with funeral services following at 1 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with Pastor Jeff Lane officiating. Interment will be held at Henagar Cemetery, Henagar, AL. Memorial contributions can be made to South Pittsburg Historical Preservation Society at P.O. Box 175 South Pittsburg, TN 37380, or any charity of your choice. Pallbearers are Joe Hewgley, Will Cooper, Andrew Hohwald, Barry Hamilton, Eric Storey, and Barry Cole. Arrangements were entrusted to Rogers Funeral Home, 400 Laurel Ave, South Pittsburg, TN, (423) 837-7176.
