During this past Thanksgiving holiday, parents and members of Marion County’s UT-TSU 4-H Extension Office hosted a brand new cooking class themed around the well renowned holiday.
Anna Belk, Family and Consumer Sciences agent for the Extension Office, explained the class consists of children working together to learn how to bake several Thanksgiving desserts, such as pumpkin spice bread as well as cookies decorated as turkeys. The class was designed to provide children with a fun and educational activity for the holiday season, exposing them to various cooking practices and safety tips.
“This is just to kind of expose them to homemade cooking practices and food safety because some kids don’t get to do that,” said Belk.
The cooking class was hosted at the Marion County Health Department building in Jasper, tickets quickly selling out due to public interest for the new program. Because of the successful turnout, Belk and others of the Extension Office are looking ahead to potentially hosts similar classes within the future, ensuring children an opportunity to try out their skills in the culinary world.
