This past weekend, the University of Tennessee Extension Office in Marion County hosted a Seed Library event, inviting everyone to take part in an agricultural endeavor. On Saturday, March 21 and Sunday, March 22, visitors could stop by, meet local Master Gardeners, and pick up free seeds to take home. This event promotes sustainability by encouraging people to reuse and share seeds instead of constantly purchasing new ones, offering a wide variety of vegetables, plants, and flowers to kickstart your garden.
The workshop was established as a way for beginners to try new things with lower risks through the community event. Beyond just free seeds, the event is also a chance to learn. Master Gardeners were available to answer questions about planting, soil, timing, and how to get the best results in the local climate. The information provided proved to be especially useful as the spring planting season officially begins.
While the Seed Library is a newer program, it builds on over a century of work by the University of Tennessee Extension to support local farmers, gardeners, and families. Seed libraries have become more popular in recent times, giving communities a simple way to share resources and encourage home gardening.
