On October 16, Marion County detectives were alerted to the presence of explosives within the city limits. Given the unstable and aged condition of these explosives, the Chattanooga Bomb Squad was called in to assist. Assessing the risk, the bomb squad determined that it was unsafe to transport the explosives to the county’s firing range across town. Instead, they chose the United Stones rock yard as a secure location for proper disposal. The disposal process was completed successfully at approximately 2:30 p.m., with no damage to nearby property or harm to individuals.
Due to the urgent need for careful handling, officials were unable to inform the public beforehand but made an announcement on Facebook shortly afterward. In response to inquiries about the location, officials confirmed that the explosives were “a large number of old blasting caps,” found on a property along South Walnut.
