After months of being under siege and supply lines having been cut off by General Braxton Bragg’s confederate army, Major General George Thomas established a new supply line and prepared to capture Orchard Knob and Lookout Mountain in Chattanooga.

On November 25, 1863, Union soldiers overtook Missionary Ridge and by taking Chattanooga, opened the “Gateway to the Lower South”. With Chattanooga under Union control, Major General William T. Sherman began an assault to Atlanta in the spring of 1864.

This Saturday, November 25, the Chickamauga & Chattanooga National Military Park will be conducting a free guided tour beginning at 9 a.m. EST at the Chickamauga Dam Reservation of the TN Riverpark (approximately 4631 Amnicola Hwy, Chattanooga). They will then move to the Chickamauga Battlefield Visitor Center for a driving tour of the Battle of Missionary Ridge. For more information contact Kim Coons at 706-866-9241, ext. 139.
