The Pryor Institute at Jasper was founded in 1887 and until 1910, was the only school in the county comparable to a high school. Some students commuted on the Valley train, while others boarded at the school. Its approximately 120 students came from seven states. Originally the school had living quarters for the school president and 60 boarding students. The school has been gone now for over half a century and all that remains to indicate that this beautiful building was ever there is the street named for it.
