Tennessee State Parks have taken a significant step towards enhancing accessibility by introducing 10 new all-terrain wheelchairs across several parks, bringing the total number of parks offering these specialized chairs to 22. Designed to navigate various outdoor terrains, these wheelchairs allow individuals with mobility impairments to explore and enjoy natural landscapes that might otherwise be out of reach.
The all-terrain wheelchairs, available at no cost to both children and adults with mobility impairments, can be operated independently or with the assistance of a caretaker. Each park that offers these chairs features specific trails designed to accommodate their use, providing a unique and accessible outdoor experience for all visitors.
To ensure availability, visitors are encouraged to request a wheelchair in advance by filling out the Tennessee State Park All-Terrain Wheelchair Request Form or contacting the park directly. While same-day requests are possible, advance notice helps guarantee that a wheelchair will be ready upon arrival, enhancing the overall experience.
Upon submitting a request, a park staff member will confirm the reservation within two days and provide instructions on how to use the wheelchair on the day of the visit. The new wheelchairs have been sourced from Sunrise Medical, a local company based in Mt. Juliet, Tennessee. Larry Jackson, President of Sunrise Medical North America, emphasized the importance of accessibility, stating, “At Sunrise Medical, we believe everyone, regardless of ability, should have the opportunity to explore Tennessee’s incredible state parks.”
The parks now offering these new all-terrain wheelchairs include Cedars of Lebanon State Park, Cordell Hull Birthplace State Park, David Crockett State Park, Fall Creek Falls State Park, Fort Pillow State Historic Park, Harrison Bay State Park, Indian Mountain State Park, Meeman-Shelby Forest State Park, Nathan Bedford Forest State Park, and Sgt. Alvin C. York State Historic Park.
This initiative reflects Tennessee State Parks’ ongoing commitment to making outdoor recreation accessible to all, ensuring that everyone can enjoy the natural beauty and recreational opportunities the state has to offer.
