This image shows the Tennessee Coal Iron and Railroad Company’s plant at Whitwell in 1908. The large building in the foreground with the tall chimney, housed the powerhouse. On the left is a chute and tipple. Workers’ housing is behind the plant on the side of the mountain. The predecessor of TCI & RR Company was the Sewanee Mining Company. In 1929 TCI & RR CO turned its property over to the Black Diamond Coal Mining Company. Although in bad shape due to its age, this postcard provides a glimpse into Whitwell’s past, back when coal was king.
