Jasper’s Board of Mayor & Aldermen has recently discussed and approved a property surplus , as well as proposal for remediation of the town’s original elementary school building, located just off of Betsy Pack Drive.
During the meeting, Mayor Jason Turner explained the surplus property concerns an old classroom modular unit also once used as a maintenance shop stationed on the premises. He and other city officials felt that the city should surplus it and put it out for bid to remove it from the property. Upon the bid being approved, it will become available during a 30-day window for those interested in purchasing the modular unit.
Additionally, Mayor Turner stated that he will reach out to OLG Engineering from Coffee County to conduct remediation work for the elementary school building. Once the facility is clear of asbestos, the city can look into eventually demolishing the building to make room to expand the local park. However, further research for funding and services must be conducted before the project can officially begin.
“We’re talking about getting a company to come in, and if its got asbestos on the floor tile or in the ceiling, then we need them to look at it and make sure they remove that before we tear the building down,” said Turner.
Members of the board approved the surplus during this month’s meeting, in addition to sharing their support of the proposal regarding remediation of the school property.
