Updates surrounding the addition of new streetlights on Highway 28 in Whitwell were recently shared during the community’s monthly city meeting.
City Manager Lonnie Cleek stated that contact has been made with both SVEC (Sequatchie Valley Electric Cooperative) and the Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) regarding setting up light posts between the four way intersection by the BP gas station and Hardee’s, all the way to Landing Zone Grill on Highway 28.
Cleek explained that while official costs are yet to be estimated, engineers from both parties are currently discussing estimates all costs involved. He stated a potential light study may be conducted due to the stretch of road containing tress and lacking mainline power lines to generate power for any light posts. He suggested that if need be, TVA (Tennessee Valley Authority) could conduct the test, as the company has previously conducted a study in the past for the city, with this potential study being no charge.
For additional clarification, Commissioner David Hudson stated that an email sent directly to Cleek from SVEC and TDOT detailed major requirements that both parties must adhere to in order for the light posts to officially be installed. Requirements include utilizing software for photometric designs for the light posts, proper permitting, as well as the authorization to either use offset or single still moving lighting.
While progress is being made regarding the project, both Cleek and city mayor Sandra Crabtree stated that further work will take some time to be completed, as a study and all requirements needed are to be met prior to installation of new lighting for Highway 28.
