The AR party is a reward for elementary students reading and testing their knowledge on the books they read. “AR” stands for Accelerated Reader. AR is when students have to read a certain number of books from the library. After reading a book, they take a quiz about the book. If you do well enough on the quiz, you get so many points. However, it differs depending on the reading level of the book.
If the students read enough books throughout the year, they get to go to the AR party. The year-end party was on May 9th, consisting of grades 2nd through 6th. There were many activities, such as a slip-n-slide, kickball, the playground, and the South Pittsburg Fire Department’s firetruck. Many kids were there that day. With the help of SPES staff, SPFD, and the SPHS Interact Club, it was an absolute blast for the students.
The AR party occurs twice every school year. The whole reason for the AR party is to get more students excited about reading.
The event started a little bit after 9:50 a.m. A few hours later at around 11 a.m., the AR students ate lunch. Their lunch was a cookout by one of the teachers. After that, most students went back to partying. A little bit later around 1 p.m., the fire truck showed up and the firemen sprayed their deck gun from the top of their firetruck and the kids played in the water. After that, the SPHS cheerleaders arrived to deliver ice cream to all the participants.
With the school year coming to a close, many more fun events will be happening to celebrate the end of the year. A special thanks to the SPES staff, SPHS Interact Club, SPHS cheerleaders and SPFD.
