During South Pittsburg’s recent city meeting, the Board of Mayor & Commissioners approved to name the town’s newest public works facility in honor of the late Michael Edward “Mike” White Sr.
Mike White Sr. was a former member of the town’s public works department, working with the street department for 29 years. His wife, Linda White, described him as a fair individual who loved the city in which he served, a community he was born and raised in throughout his life.
“He just loved the city and he enjoyed doing things for the city,” said Linda.
City Administrator Michael Hudson presented the honorary naming as the meeting progressed, the designation introduced under Resolution 1055. Hudson explained upon speaking with many public works employees and city officials regarding the naming of the facility, all felt best to have it named in honor of the longtime resident who has recently passed away.
“I’ve spoken with many of our public works guys and our city commissioners, and they felt that it was a good idea for the community and for Mr. Mike White’s memory to name that building after him,” said Hudson. “I couldn’t agree more. I did not know Mr. White, but since I’ve been here I have heard so many positive things about him.”
Hudson explained if Resolution 1055 passes, a plaque would then be introduced to dedicate White Sr., and the plaque would be installed to the new public works facility. City Mayor Shawn Henson also noted a ribbon cutting ceremony/open house would be hosted during the plaque’s designation, ensuring further his name is honored within South Pittsburg.
Before discussion surrounding the resolution concluded, Commissioner Ronny Myers took a moment to read aloud a note on behalf of the White family, written by Linda. Linda’s note expressed appreciation towards the board’s decision to name the new public works facility after her late husband, stating additional appreciation from the entire White family to the city for their approval of the resolution.
“On behalf of my late husband, myself, our children and the White family, we would like to say thank you from the bottom of our hearts,” read Myers on behalf of Linda.
