South Pittsburg Pirates recognized for championship title

The South Pittsburg Pirates were recognized by the Marion County Commissions for their victory and becoming the 2025 TSSAA Class 1A BlueCross Bowl State Champions.

Head Coach Wes Stone, alongside several Pirate football players, were recognized for entire team’s eighth championship victory within Class 1A football. Commissioner David Abbott took to the floor to present the team a proclamation award for their efforts during the 2025 football season, Abbott noting on the team’s completion of the season with 14 wins and only one loss. While reading aloud the proclamation, support from family, students, teammates, school faculty and coaches were mentioned to being major and integral aspects to the team’s success during the game and season, the leadership of Stone and other coaches also contributing to the team’s eighth winning title.

“Whereas the major, commissioners, and citizens of Marion County are pleased to publicly commend and recognize the South Pittsburg Pirates for their accomplishments,” Abbott said. “Therefore, be it proclaimed that the mayor, the board of commissioners of Marion County do hereby recognize and congratulate the South Pittsburg High School Varsity football team for winning Class 1A State Championship.”

The 2025 TSSAA Class 1A BlueCross Bowl was held from Dec. 4 to Dec. 6 at Chattanooga’s Finley Stadium. There, numerous high school football teams competed for the state championship title in varying classes. During the game, the Pirates took home a major 42-14 win against the McKenzie High School Rebels, once again taking home and cementing the title of state champions for Tennessee.

Upon receiving the proclamation, Stone and the attending team members were met with rousing applause from both the commission and citizens in participation to the meeting, all of whom showed their support and excitement for the team’s recent accomplishment within the 2025 football season.
