Last Friday night marked a crucial 1A district matchup featuring cross-town rivals Whitwell (2-13) and South Pittsburg (8-2).

The South Pittsburg boys’ team masterfully handled the Whitwell boys, securing a commanding lead in the district with a final score of 69-47.

The Pirates dominated the Tigers in the initial two quarters, with Jamarion Farrior contributing all 12 of his points. RaCash Kelly showcased his scoring prowess, accumulating all 14 of his points in the first quarter. Kelly went a flawless 6-for-6 at the foul line, in addition to sinking two three-pointers and a field goal.

At halftime, the Pirates had amassed a 47-23 lead, leaving Whitwell with a considerable deficit to overcome.

Despite Whitwell’s efforts, attempting seven long-range shots throughout all four quarters, including successful attempts by Gavin Grimes, Landon Holtcamp, and Bubba Smith (each with one), and Jace Wooden and Ramsey West (each with two), Wooden was the lone Tiger reaching double-digit points, finishing with 19.

In the second half, the Pirates distributed their scoring across eight different players. In the third, Cavin Gilley extended the Pirates lead by scoring six of his eight total points with two three-pointers.

Although Whitwell managed a 13-point fourth quarter to South Pittsburg’s eight, it was insufficient to challenge the Pirates’ comfortable 27-point lead going into the final frame. The Pirates ultimately secured the victory.

Following their victory against the Tigers, the Pirates concluded the week with a 2-1 record. They suffered a 73-62 loss to Bledsoe Co. but rebounded with a 52-31 win over St. Andrews-Sewanee. Meanwhile, the Tigers had a challenging week, going 0-2 with a 69-49 loss to LaFayette.

Looking ahead, South Pittsburg and Whitwell are set to host upcoming games on their home courts. The Pirates are gearing up to face Chattanooga Prep on Jan. 16, while the Tigers will welcome Rockwood on Jan. 15.
