Schools close for extreme weather

With the rare and extreme weather occurrences many businesses were closed, but even more schools saw closures and delays.

Tuesday January 16 was the 10th time since at least 2011 that a minimum of 92 of Tennessee’s 95 counties were closed due to inclement weather on the same day:

  • 2-18-15 (94 counties closed, 1 county in school (Bradley))
  • 2-19-15 (94 counties closed, 1 county in school (Shelby))
  • 2-20-15 (94 counties closed, 1 professional development (Marion))
  • 3-5-15 (94 counties closed, 1 county early dismissal (Bradley))
  • 1-20-16 (92 counties closed, 3 counties in school (Madison, Tipton, Shelby))
  • 1-16-18 (92 counties closed, 2 early dismissals, 1 in-service)
  • 1-17-18 (All 95 counties closed, all 42 city districts closed)
  • 1-18-18 (All 95 counties closed)
  • 1-7-22 (93 counties closed, 2 counties in school (Hamilton, Shelby))
  • 1-16-24 (95 counties closed)
  • 1-17-24 (95 counties closed)
  • 1-18-24 (94 counties closed, 1 city district delayed)
  • 1-19-24 (95 counties closed)

Rarely, everything aligns, and all 95 counties are scheduled to be in school and all cancel due to weather. This happened in January 2018 for 2 days, when all 95 counties closed due to snow. On January 17, 2018, all 95 counties and all 42 city districts closed.
