During its November meeting, the Board of Education (BoE) has introduced and welcomed Whitwell High School student Jagger Gilliam as the student advisory board’s newest member.

Gilliam is a senior student at Whitwell High School who, according to Chairman Ryan Philips, is one of the members of the BoE’s newly formed student advisory board. The advisory was established back in June this year, where the BoE gave the go ahead following discussion about a new student-based panel being formed. Under Tennessee Senate Bill 161, all school systems are required to have one student from each high school represent a county’s student board, so Gilliam will represent Whitwell High School alongside the two additional members from Marion County and South Pittsburg High. All members under the board are to report to the leading chairmen of the school system, sharing with them any ongoing concerns from each facility.

“He’s going to be in contact with us until he graduates to let us what we’re doing right and what we’re doing wrong,” said Philips.

Gilliam’s introduction was met with applause from those who attended the November meeting, leaving him welcomed with open arms as a member of the advisory board.
