St. Andrew’s-Sewanee Gallery will welcome the work of Caroline Minchew from October 7 – November 8.
Community members will have the opportunity to meet and talk with the artist on Thursday, October 17, during a gallery reception from 4:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. in the St. Andrew’s-Sewanee Gallery. All are invited to attend.
Artist Minchew produces work that bridges the worlds of spirit and matter through ecology and belief. “Viriditas” translates as “the greening of the green”. Inspired by gardens and healing, this exhibit explores a contemporary definition of “viriditas,” deciphering human interaction with the environment. According to Minchew, “Through analog photographs and various printmaking techniques, the gallery becomes a physical space for understanding and learning, much like a medieval garden. These works consider how multiple stories of land and ecology can weave together into a larger parable, drawing parallels between place and memory.”
Minchew is a lens-based artist. She received her MFA from Virginia Commonwealth University and BA from Sewanee: The University of the South. She has attended residences at NARS Foundation, ChaNorth, Mudhouse Arts, Penland School of Arts and Crafts, and Burren College of Art. Her work has been exhibited most recently at NARS Foundation, Candela Gallery and The Anderson. Minchew’s photographs are housed in the permanent collections of the National Museum of American History and the National Gallery of Art Photograph Study Collection in Washington, DC. Currently she is a Visiting Assistant Professor of Art at Sewanee.
