Raymond Edward Hibbs, age 86 of South Pittsburg passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 10, surrounded by his loving family.
Raymond was born in South Pittsburg. He faithfully served his country in the United States Army and later spent many years working as an ironworker, where he was a proud and dedicated member of Iron Workers Local 704 for 36 years. He was known as a hardworking man who took pride in his craft and in providing for his family.
After retiring from iron work, Raymond continued to stay active doing what he loved. He worked installing hardwood and tile flooring, a trade he took great pride in and one that allowed him to continue serving others with the skill of his hands.
Raymond was a faithful member of Pine Grove Baptist Church. His Christian faith was central to his life and he cherished the fellowship, worship, and encouragement he found in his church family.
One of Raymond’s greatest joys was music. He had a deep love for gospel bluegrass and spent many hours playing the guitar and dobro. Through music, he shared his faith and brought joy to those around him.
Raymond will be remembered as a man of faith, humility, and quiet strength. His life reflected his love for God, his country, and the simple blessings of family, music, and community. Though he will be deeply missed, his family finds comfort in knowing he is now at peace in the presence of the Lord.
Raymond is preceded in death by his parents Oscar and Sarah Payne Hibbs and siblings Horace Hibbs, Rose Jones, Linda Hibbs, Robina Hibbs, Freida Sitz, Samuel Hibbs and Ralph Hibbs.
He is survived by his wife of 37 years Naomi Reeves Hibbs, stepdaughters Celeste Choate Rogers and Deanna (Corey) Hughes, grandsons Garrett Rogers and Lincoln Hughes, siblings Sue Giles, Wilma (Jimmy) Haun, Roy (Ruth) Hibbs, Rachel Hibbs, Charles Hibbs, Paul (Wilma) Hibbs, Danny (Gail) Hibbs, Johnny (Joyce) Hibbs and Joe (Carol) Hibbs, as well as several nieces, nephews, and friends.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, March 14 at 1 p.m. at the Pine Grove Baptist Church, in South Pittsburg, with Pastor Jacob Frady, Bro. Mickey Skates and Bro. David Marona who officiated.
The Sequatchie Valley Veterans Honor Guard conducted Military Honors for Mr. Hibbs at the cemetery following the church service.
Interment was followed at New Hope Cemetery following the funeral services.
Visitation was held on Thursday, March 12 and Friday, March 13 from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. both days and Saturday, March 14 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., all at Rogers Funeral Home on 400 Laurel Ave in South Pittsburg prior to the funeral services at Pine Grove Baptist Church at 1 p.m.
