A recent power outage in the Jasper area is being blamed an unexpected culprit, the source of the interruption of service discovered soon after the outage by Sequatchie Valley Electric Cooperative (SVEC).

On the morning hours of May 30 last week, residents and business owners were left without power, causing SVEC to jump into action and quickly find the source of the outage. The source was traced to SVEC’s Jasper substation, where upon reviewing security footage it was discovered that a small animal led to the cause of the power outages within the area. Utility officials noted that animal-caused power outages are a rather common occurrence, especially during the warmer months of the year despite protective equipment being on-site around all substations within the Sequatchie Valley region.

The security footage was used by officials to swiftly repair all damages and restore power to the residents of Jasper. If any outages occur, SVEC can be contacted at 423-837-8605, as well as 888-421-7832 for 24/7 emergency situations.
