The South Pittsburg boys’ basketball team improved their record to 12-2 last Friday night, beating Sequatchie Co. 49-39.

Scoring was kept to a minimum most of the night between the two squads, with each having one single-digit scoring quarter in the contest.

The Indians started by only scoring six points to the Pirates’ 12 in the first quarter. Then South Pittsburg only scored five to Sequatchie Co.’s 10 the next quarter.

Each team was successful just once at the foul line in their two tries in the first half. However, the teams combined for five three-pointers, with the Pirates’ Cavin Gilley going long-range twice in the first quarter.

It would be a one-point advantage heading into the break, with the Pirates up 17-16.

The Pirates would increase their lead in the third quarter, scoring 18, with RaCash Kelly scoring six. Entering the fourth with a nine-point lead, the Pirates finished the Indians off by scoring most of their points at the charity stripe, going 9-of-18, thanks to Walker Thomas who finished with 10 points, Kelly who finished with 11 points, and Gilley who was the highest scorer of the night with 19 points.

The Pirates also picked up a victory over Van Buren Co., 58-55 last Thursday evening, giving them a 3-0 1A District 6 record and the lead.

Stats were unavailable for the Lady Pirates’ team by press time. They beat Bledsoe Co. 62-39 but fell to Sequatchie Co. 48-38, giving them a 5-6 overall record.

The Pirates have a busy weekend ahead with back-to-back games Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Saturday will be Senior Night at home against Copper Basin.
