Benny Pickett sought clarification and action from the Whitwell Mayor and Commissioner Board on the neglect of the Whitwell cemetery recently.
Pickett addressed the board, regarding the cemetery on Highway 108, inquiring about the extent of the city limit line and confirming that the cemetery is within city limits. He questioned why the back end of the cemetery was not being mowed, noting that since Larry, the previous person in charge of mowing, retired, the entire cemetery has only been mowed once.
Cleek explained that mowing had fallen behind due to the prioritization of other projects and the need to conserve fuel as diesel prices were high. He assured Pickett that the area has not been forgotten and will be addressed. Commissioner Dillon added that limited manpower has required the city to mow in sections, and workers need breaks to avoid heat stroke due to the weather conditions.
