Ordinance 862 regarding the consumption and purchase of alcoholic beverages at South Pittsburg’s iconic Princess Theatre has received approval of its first reading during the city’s monthly meeting.

City Administrator Michael Hudson explained how a previous ordinance was established that allowed for alcoholic beverages to be sold at the Princess Theatre. However, all beverages were to only be sold through a non-profit entity. Because of the theatre now being under new management, as well as recently in full operation , the city and managers Wesley and Kerri Brewer ran into several roadblocks seeking non-profit sellers due to insurance policies not allowing alcohol to be sold outside a given entity’s own premises.

Hudson stated that the new ordinance was established to allow any entity, whether business or non-profit, to sell alcoholic beverages within the Princess Theatre so long as all qualifications are met. He also noted the ordinance would allow for the Brewers to apply for a beer license to officially sell beverages as well. However, only beer would be sold within the Princess Theatre.

The first reading was unanimously approved by the Board of Mayor & Commissioners, with a second reading yet to be examined.
