In a unanimous decision at the Town of Jasper meeting on August 14, the town will no longer have refundable meter deposits and will instead have connection fees that will be non-refundable.
The request was supported by other surrounding cities amending their rules to be the same. City Recorder Paula Turney brought this to the board and stated that, “They’re trying to get away from refunds altogether.” Turney cited that many times the city has trouble finding the people to return the deposit and costs more money than the deposit is worth. She further supported the claim that the companies “have to make an effort,” and described the difficulties of returned checks costs and the checks sitting in an account untouched.
Alderwoman Vikki Morgan agreed in changing the fee to be non-refundable stating, “It sounds like it’s getting rid of a headache.”
All board members approved the change and going forward Jasper will require a non-refundable connection fee to use the water and sewer services.
