During Whitwell’s February city meeting, Vice Mayor Mike Dillon and the rest of the city board announced a new RV and boat storage facility is in the works of setting up shop in the community.

According to Dillon, the storage facility was presented during the January planning commission meeting, where the facility was presented to be possibly located in a vacant property beside Lofty Asphalt off of State Route 28. City Manager Lonnie Cleek explained because of the property was already zoned for commercial usage, no additional approval from the city council is needed, and the only requirements needed are proper business licensing, permit submission, and additional inspection before official approval is made by the planning commission.

Mayor Sandra Crabtree noted the owner looking to establish the facility first attended the planning commission meeting to present the idea prior to the further work being conducted. The reason doing is so that community feedback can be provided, therefore showcasing whether interest towards a new storage facility is present among residents of Whitwell.

“It’s in the early stages,” Crabtree said. “They just wanted to see what everybody thought about it.”

Since the announcement, the planning commission has held another public meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 24, where the new project was further discussed among its members.
