The Town of Jasper’s Mayor and Board of Aldermen are looking forward to the holiday season with the potential purchase of a skating rink, inspired by the success of last year’s community event.

At a recent city board meeting, Mayor Jason Turner introduced the idea of purchasing a skating rink for the community to use annually. He noted that last year, the city spent around $35,000 renting a skating rink for a limited time. After researching costs, estimates for buying one ranged from $30,000 to $160,000. Mayor Turner proposed buying a higher-quality rink, which would be more cost-effective in the long run. While no decision was made to purchase the rink immediately, the board agreed to explore the option and put out a request for bids.

During public comments, some raised concerns about the city losing $5,000 last year on the skating rink, despite sponsorship from five local businesses. Some felt it was irresponsible to consider this purchase with other pressing needs in the city. Mayor Turner defended the idea, explaining that owning the rink would provide long-term benefits. He highlighted that the skating rink boosted local business profits significantly, with some, like Redpoint Inn, seeing sales increase by 60%. Turner emphasized that the city isn’t focused on making a profit but on providing activities that enhance quality of life and promote tourism.

Mayor Turner stressed that this project, like other community events such as the Jack-o-lantern Jamboree and Christmas parade, may cost the city but is meant to enrich the lives of residents. He assured the public that the board’s approval was merely to gather bids and assess feasibility, not to rush into a purchase. The board reaffirmed that events like the skating rink create cherished family memories and keep local spending within the community.

With last year’s ticket prices at only $7 for adults and $5.50 for children, residents were able to enjoy these experiences close to home without needing to spend money in other cities. As a reminder, the specific prices for the upcoming year have not been made available.

The board expressed their gratitude for the community’s appreciation, reiterating that providing these opportunities is part of their commitment to enhancing life in Jasper.
