Margo Paty Pickering, a beloved member of the Dickson County, Tennessee, community, suddenly passed away on February 20, at the age of 77. She was born in Nashville on November 15, 1946, and her life was defined by her strong commitment to education, service, and kindness.
Margo graduated from Peabody Demonstration School and the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. She later served as President of the UT Alumni Board, demonstrating her enduring dedication to her alma mater. Her blood ran deep orange! She earned her master’s degree from George Peabody College for Teachers. Her passion for education defined her professional life. She helped start the kindergarten program in Hickman County, taught in Marion County, and later in Dickson County at Vanleer Elementary, where she was honored as Teacher of the Year before retiring. Her impact on countless students and colleagues will be remembered fondly for years to come.
Apart from her professional endeavors, Margo found joy in life’s simple pleasures. An avid reader, she found solace and inspiration within the pages of her favorite books. She loved the beauty of nature, particularly the first sight of buttercups blooming in the spring, the sunrises, and the gentle glow of sunlight filtering through blue glass bottles in her windows. Margo delighted in decorating for holidays (ALL of them!) and time spent with her grandchildren. Her generous heart and kind soul touched the lives of all who knew her, and she made it her mission to care for her community each and every day.
Margo adored her family above all else and is survived by her daughters Shannon (Curtis) Sharpe, and Leigh (Jody) Ware, as well as her adored grandchildren Nick, Emily, and Will. She leaves behind her sister, Shannon Paty, and brother, Ben (Melissa) Paty. She was predeceased by her parents, Nina and Ben Paty, her beloved husband, Bob Pickering, and sister Cheryl Paty.
In honoring Margo Paty Pickering’s memory, let us remember her legacy of love, compassion, and dedication to others. She will be deeply missed but forever remembered for the light she brought into the lives of those around her. There will not be any services, upon her wishes. If you wish to donate in her honor, please consider contributing to Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, Vanleer Elementary School’s library, or the Dickson County Food Bank.
