The Whitwell Lady Tigers softball team faced East Hamilton last Saturday. In a closely contested game, it was the Lady Tigers who came away with a 2-1 victory over the Hurricanes.
East Hamilton took an early lead on an error by Whitwell, but that was the only run the Hurricanes would score. They threatened again in the second inning, but a double play helped the Lady Tigers escape a bases-loaded jam.
It took some time for Whitwell to get going, but in the fourth inning, they broke through. The first run came on an error by East Hamilton’s shortstop. With two outs, freshman Bayli Brown delivered a single to give the Lady Tigers a one-run lead.
That was all the scoring Whitwell needed, as they shut down the Hurricanes in every inning but the first. Jacie Willis earned the win in the circle, throwing a complete game while allowing four hits and one run, and striking out five.
Willis led the Lady Tigers with two hits. Callie Brock, Vada Crouch, and Brown each had a hit.
Whitwell returns to action Thursday at home, with first pitch set for 5 p.m. against Lookout Valley.
