The city of Jasper received three bids for security camera installations at the water plant, and Mayor Jason Turner is currently evaluating the two lowest bids. While Mayor Turner leans toward selecting the lowest bid, he noted that he has a few outstanding questions and has been unable to consult with the bid representative due to the representative’s recent illness.
Mayor Turner explained that the new cameras are intended to replace those previously destroyed by a surge, which also damaged two computers and the existing security system. The upgraded system will provide video coverage of the water plant, secure the equipment, and include card reader access doors to enhance overall security. He acknowledged that the current security measures are outdated, and the new system is crucial for protecting the facility.
One of Mayor Turner’s key concerns is preventing future damage from power surges. He mentioned that one of the bids includes surge and lightning strike protection, which is an important consideration in his decision.
To accommodate the best bids, Mayor Turner proposed raising the budget limit to $52,000. The board recognized the importance of this investment in community safety and unanimously approved the budget increase. A final decision on the bid will be made at the next meeting, scheduled for September 12 at 6 p.m. in the Carolyn Stewart Library meeting area.
