Justin Baker, Park Director for the city of Jasper has shared various updates and upcoming events for the community during the town’s July city meeting.
During the discussion, Baker shared various numbers in sign-ups for local sports during the fall sports season. He also noted about upcoming events for the holiday season later this year. For sign-ups, baseball, tee ball and softball registrations have reached 231 participants so far, with flag football reaching 23 sign-ups in part. Baker also expressed a moment of congratulations for the town’s 13 Youth Softball Team for recently winning the state’s Dizzy Dean Championship, as well as for Fire Chief Joshua Huff’s work and dedication into serving as one of the coaches for the team. Jasper’s 6U Softball was also mentioned for being among the runner up teams for this year’s game, with the team being coached by Derek Sisk of Jasper.
During the meeting, Baker noted that this year’s Big Boom event was a major success. Citing it in a similar mention as Mayor Jason Turner . He expressed his thanks to all the volunteers who helped make it a successful event, as well as praised their support and work during Jasper’s Big Boom. He additionally announced two of the community’s major upcoming holiday events; the Joshua Jennings Jasper Jack-O-Lantern Jamboree on Saturday, October 25 and Jasper’s annual Christmas Parade on Saturday, December 13. He further stated how the downtown square will be decorated for the Jamboree. He also explained how another major event is in the works for the same day as the Christmas Parade. Alderwoman Vikki Morgan and a team of individuals are currently working together to establish an additional event for that day.
“Miss Vikki and her group has been working real hard on that, and we’re looking for a really big event that day,” said Baker.
The discussion ultimately concluded when Justin moved onto sharing updates about the town’s streets and sanitation, which ranged from Oak Street being paved to extra brush pickups being conducted due to recent summer weather.
