Hurricane Helene prompts significant response from local departments to aid in the massive relief efforts needed for those affected.
On September 29, the Jasper Highlands Fire Department (JHFD) announced their involvement in the disaster relief efforts following the severe flooding caused by Hurricane Helene in northeastern Tennessee and western North Carolina. In response to a request from the Tennessee State Regional Mutual Aid Coordinator, JHFD assembled a team of six members, including Assistant Chief Rich Hahn, Coley Brown, Jeff Wolf, Michael Brooks, Christine Brooks, and Lois Garrett. The team, equipped with three ATVs and various gear, partnered with the Chattanooga Fire Department, Dunlap Fire Department, and Sequatchie County volunteer fire departments. They departed the following evening to assist in the recovery efforts.
Generous support came from the community, with trailers loaned by the Harper, Matthews, and Borreson families. Two ATVs were borrowed from Rich Hahn and Steve Shapiro, while members also contributed chainsaws and other necessary equipment. The team prepared for a 12-24 hour operational period, bringing their own food, water, and supplies to remain self-sufficient while deployed in the disaster zone.
By October 1, the JHFD team had arrived in Erwin, Tennessee, Unicoi County’s seat, where they were deployed to assist with checking in on remote communities, coordinating food and shelter arrangements, and helping to set up local shelters. They agreed to extend their mission for an additional day to continue their efforts.
During this time, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) set up a hotline to handle missing persons reports from the areas affected by the flooding in East Tennessee. Residents were encouraged to provide identifying information, including names, phone numbers, and vehicle details, to help law enforcement track missing individuals.
The JHFD encouraged community members with non-emergency inquiries to contact them via Facebook or email, and those interested in volunteering were invited to reach out to Assistant Chief Rich Hahn or the Auxiliary team. Further updates were made available through the JHFD’s website and Facebook page.
