The Board of Mayor and Aldermen in Jasper recently held its first public meeting inside the town’s new city hall, located at 32 Courthouse Square.
The building was originally owned by city attorneys Mark Raines Jr. and Charlie Jenkins, who decided to sell the property during the Board’s December meeting. At over 6,000 square feet, the office was deemed too large for their legal operations. The proposed sale was brought before the Board, and Mayor Jason Turner along with all other members unanimously voted to acquire the structure from Raines and Jenkins.
After several months of evaluation and interior renovations, the new city hall is now officially open to the public. The building features expanded space and additional office rooms for city officials. One of the most notable upgrades is the addition of a Community Room. Mayor Turner explained that the space was created by removing three separate offices and converting them into a single, large room that can now serve multiple purposes.
“This is a community room for us, so this is able to be rented out for birthday parties or whatever you need,” said Turner.
The meeting followed the usual format, with updates and announcements shared. Some residents also voiced concerns during the Public Comments section, particularly regarding the use of city budget funds.
All future city meetings will now be held at the new city hall in downtown Jasper. The next meeting is scheduled for Monday, June 9 at 6 p.m.
