Linda Hooper, community member and volunteer advocate, spoke at the Whitwell city meeting to ask the board to support the updates and changes proposed for the Whitwell Heritage Center.

Hooper expressed her concerns regarding several local facilities. She highlighted issues with the library and senior center, noting their current state as “a mess.” Additionally, Hooper emphasized the need for improvements to the mining and holocaust museums, as well as the lack of a dedicated space for local veterans to display their artifacts.

Due to these concerns, Hooper urged the board to seek funding to expand the library, aiming to provide support for future generations to appreciate their heritage. She explained her team is exploring avenues for funding from celebrities known for their charity work, such as Dolly Parton and Taylor Swift. Hooper also mentioned they are reaching out to a Jewish organization for support, particularly regarding updates for the holocaust museum, and requested assistance in acquiring grants to facilitate these updates.

Commissioner Mike Dillon reflected on Hooper’s generation as one that “knew how to get things done,” underscoring the importance of community action. Mayor Sandra Crabtree acknowledged the board’s previous support for a grant for the library but noted that changes would be necessary to accommodate the proposed heritage center. She informed Hooper and the audience of the upcoming Planning Commission meeting on Feb. 22, where these ideas and proposals could be further discussed.

Hooper stressed the importance of community collaboration, stating, “it’s gonna take the whole community,” and emphasized that progress would require collective efforts. The board echoed her sentiments, expressing agreement with her statements and committing to support moving forward. As plans unfold, the community can expect future updates on this initiative aimed at celebrating history and community work in Whitwell.
