South Pittsburg’s long awaited history signs have recently been unveiled during the community’s South Pittsburg Historic Preservation Society (SPHPS) meeting.
Vice Chairman Bill Boyd presented three separate signs dedicated to the history of some of the town’s most historic landmarks. Boyd explained that all planned history signs are now officially ready for production, a total of nine double sided signs set to go across different posts throughout Cedar Avenue.
“There are only three, but we have 12 pictures to go onto six double-sided signs,” said Boyd.
The company responsible for creating the signs was Sign 1-1 out of Scottsboro, Ala., who will also take charge building the remaining history signs for South Pittsburg. Carolyn Millhiser, secretary of the SPHPS committee, explained both sides of every sign will feature individual photos and summaries regarding each historic structure throughout Cedar Avenue, detailing the history and purpose of South Pittsburg’s most well-known buildings.
“We made each one have a different story on the other side, rather than put the same story on both sides,” said Millhiser.
During the discussion, Boyd also explained that all signs are enamel in design and can last up to 50 years, ensuring the longevity of each one during the elements, in addition to being easy to maintain. He stated that after the meeting, he would contact Sign 1-1 following day to give them the go ahead on producing the six remaining signs, production to potentially begin right after New Year’s Day.
