A forest fire that recently sprung up within the “Pocket” region of Whitwell Mountain has been contained by local forestry services.

The fire, which started in the morning hours of December 27, had spread and consumed approximately 28.6 acres within the area according to measured data reported on Tennessee Wildland Fire’s wildfire public viewer map. As of press time there has been no reason given on what caused the fire.

Tennessee Wildland Fire is a program of the Tennessee Department of Agriculture Division of Forestry that dedicates to the monitoring and prevention of wildfires within the Volunteer State. According to comments made by the Marion County Sheriff’s Department on their Facebook post regarding the fire, local forestry services had made a trench that surrounded the forest fire, which along with the help of Mother Nature sending in forecasted rain throughout the day, the fire was quickly contained and put out. No injuries or major damage was reported during the spread of the fire
