The third and final reading of Ordinance #375 regarding the rezoning of property in Industrial Park at Whitwell was examined and passed by the town’s Board of Mayor & Commissioners.

The agenda item was first discussed during the city’s previous meeting in March, with it regarding rezoning of property categorized as both commercial and industrial to be used for housing by the local Industrial Park. The first and second readings of the agenda item had been reviewed and approved throughout the previous two meetings of March and April, with this month’s last reading marking the next step into having the property utilized for residential use.

The land is currently owned by Bryan and Keith Lofty of Lofty Paving & Grading and co-owned by Chris Pryor, with the three men looking to construct up to over a dozen new homes onto the property. Commissioner David Hudson, who’s also a member of the community’s planning commission, further added how the Loftys and Pryor plan to have each home be placed on subdivided lots up to six acres in size. The three men were looking to subdividing the land in order to achieve infrastructural control when constructing the entire subdivision, such as having the ability to add in roads as well as the required plumbing needed for the new houses.

“That’s what they presented to us. That way they’d have to do the road and they would have to do the plumbing,” noted Hudson.

All members of the City Board unanimously agreed to pass the third reading of Ordinance #375 during this month’s meeting, thus leaving the Loftys and Pryor with the opportunity to begin work on adding new housing near Industrial Park.
