Edna Pauline “Polly” Mathews, 92

Edna Pauline “Polly” Mathews, 92, of South Pittsburg, peacefully passed away surrounded by her loved ones on Tuesday, May 28. Polly was a lifelong resident of South Pittsburg. She attended Orme Mountain Church of God for 74 years and loved the Lord with all her heart. She was a loving mother, grandmother, and great-great mother and will be missed by all. She loved playing the guitar and singing gospel songs.  She also, was an amazing seamstress, and cook.

Preceded in death by her mother, Margaret Vanallman; stepfather, James “Buster” Vanallman; sisters, Eddy Lynch, Dorothy Nunley; brothers, Wallace and Milton Vanallman; husband, Austin Mathews; son, Jerry W. Mathews; grandson, Michael L. Grider; sons-in-law, Terry and Randall Grider.

Survivors include her children, Darlene Grider of Bridgeport, AL, Carlotta Grider of Stevenson, AL, Roger (Cindy) Mathews, Jim (Joy) Mathews, Laverne (Arlene) Mathews, Don (Cheryl) Mathews; brother, Phillip Vanallman; sister, Sarah “Tooter” Reed; several grandchildren, great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren; lifelong friends, Betty Nunley, Sue Giles, Sheila and Wade Garner, Wilma Hibbs and special friend, Joseph Hadaway, Jr.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, June 1, at 1 p.m. at Rogers Funeral Home South Pittsburg Chapel with Bro. David Swanner, Bro. Kevin York, and Bro. Darrell Nunley officiating. Visitation will be held on Friday, May 31, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. and on Saturday, June 1, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. prior to the funeral service in the chapel.

Mrs. Mathews will be laid to rest at Orme Mountain Cemetery, South Pittsburg, TN.

Pallbearers will be Roger Mathews, Laverne Mathews, Don Mathews, Jim Mathews, Joey Mathews, and Johnny Mathews. Honorary Pallbearers will be grandsons, Jamie Mathews, David Grider, Kevin Mathews and great grandsons, Michael Mathews, Gage Mathews, and Ben Mathews.
