I’m Rose Mary Drake and I’m the Democratic nominee for the Tennessee House District 39 seat (Marion and Franklin counties). I’m a native Tennessean and I live on Sewanee Mountain near Jump-off, where I keep bees, tend my land, and enjoy church and volunteer activities. I was educated in public schools and then went on to graduate from Sewanee and then Vanderbilt School of Law. I’m retired from over thirty years of law practice. I’m running for the state legislature to bring a new perspective, based upon an understanding of our law and history, and with a commitment to finding common sense solutions to the problems we face.
Some of you may be reluctant to support me because I am a Democrat and in recent years, voters in my district have mostly elected Republicans to state office. However, if you look at my positions on the issues, and my background and experience, you may find me more qualified, and more in line with your thinking, than your current representation.
I believe that public funds should be used for public schools, not private entities. I believe that women should be trusted to make their own reproductive healthcare decisions. I believe that we should join the 41 other states that have expanded Medicaid eligibility so that we strengthen rural hospitals and clinics, provide health insurance for those who now fall in the gap between those covered by Medicaid and those eligible for ACA subsidies, and bring our federal tax dollars back to Tennessee. I believe that we must be vigilant in protecting our natural resources from exploitation and ruin. You can find out more about me and where I stand on the issues at www.rmd4tn.com.
This is my first time running for public office. I have been blessed to receive the support of over 200 individual volunteers and donors to my campaign. While I respect my opponent’s past service, her positions do not represent the majority of voters, and her campaign is funded primarily by corporate and special-interest PACs. If you elect me, I’ll be working for you, not PACs. I know how to stand up for the people I represent, and I know how to work towards compromise and consensus for the greater good. I would appreciate your support and your vote.
